TAC Report: Gmail Advertising

I recently discovered that over half of my Google Content Network Traffic has been coming from Gmail Ads. And to be honest, this was pretty much unintentional. And since I didn’t really know how 50% of my Ads were ending up in Gmail, I decided to do a little research.
Once I got going, I stumbled across some pretty sweet stuff. In fact, some stuff that I’m kinda surprised I hadn’t seen before. Let’s just say, I found out that Gmail lets me read the minds of my customers.
Now I’ve got my “4 Bigs Ways To Use Gmail Ads” ready for you to devour. With these 4 tricks, you’ll learn the truth about ‘Thought Stringing” and how to enter the conversation already going on inside your customers head.
I’ll even let you in on what I’m calling my “Sneaky Ninja Voodoo Tactic.” No Joke, this is one tactic that’s going to make you grin when you hear it. And make your grin even bigger when it starts working for you!
This is a power-packed report with tactics you can start implementing immediately. Start watching this report right now, so you can get a seriously unfair advantage over your competitors.

Hey Ryan,
The Gmail Marketing training module is fantastic! I thought of an idea, although I haven’t tested it yet. Because I am a member of a number of groups from various social media sites, I think that I will begin testing those targeted emails.
Bid on the keywords that automatically go out to all group members whenever a new post/update occurs. This will keep you in front of all group members almost daily via Gmail!

Ryan,
Really enjoyed this, I bet you must have just as much fun in making this Video. Great Tip this “Gmail Advert Targeting”, man!!
As for my pointer, how would you like to tell your customers to download their gmail emails to MS Outlook or on their Smartphones rather than checking their Gmail email regularly on the web?
This way you protect your competitors using this tactic on you. Only time they would refer to the web based Gmail is to clear the bulk emails or check their Spam Folders. Emphasize the importance of keeping the emails on the Computer so that it can be referred to much easily when you are not online or on the road.
Probably the best way for you to do this would to package it with one of your product so that it does not sticks out or becomes questionable.
Good luck!!
Cheers, RC
what program was the presentation made with?
REPLY- This was made with “Keynote” on a Macbook Pro.
Ryan,
Great training and insight! Thanks to you and the team for putting this information forward.
This training is full of opportunities to expand our marketing reach and I can’t wait to implement these ideas and begin testing them.
As always, powerful stuff!
Thanks, again.

Hi - Has Google threaten to suspend your account from this kind of advertising? or is this acceptable to GMail/Gooogle.
Thanks very much.
Love the concept!
REPLY- Google has not threatened me at all over this type of advertising. And at this point I can’t see why they would
Just a quick heads up. I just launched a test campaign. If I can figure this out to work it could be the crux of my online lead generation.
Even though I plan on having a 30day test period, I’ll report back on findings in 7 days. Let you know what’s going on.
I’ll also let you know about my niche and how this could very well be the PERFECT lead gen tool for it. More so than practically any other niche around.
- Kennedy
Are you using exact match or phrase match for specific terms (like the address or company name)?
REPLY- We’re using exact phrase matching.
Great trick. Why don’t I think of that before ? That will save my pocket for adword for the targeted market.
PS. I like the sneaky ninja voodo tactic. Its a lil bit illegal
Hartono
Couldn’t you do something with “signature settings” in gmail with this?
You could set up your own content each time you sent your own emails out to someone, right?
If you could, you could tell someone to look over to the right and see your ad while they are actually reading their email from gmail.
Am just talking out loud here and don’t know if this would work or not.
- Chuck
I just purchased the gmail advertising/mind tricks.
I am sure that I will be able to use this…but….for once I would like
to buy a product and NOT get pitched an immediate upsell that implies that what I just paid $97.00 for is going to be impotent compared to spending another $197.00 on the following product.
I am running out of $200 bills….please tell me that this will be a valuable tool without the extra $197.00 investment..
Charlie
REPLY- You will be fine with out purchasing the Upsell. It’s just a great add on that we offered. But again, you’ll be fine without it.
Ryan, I have been doing this for quite a while and have made hundreds of thousands from it. Gmail is the Catch All for internet Marketers and millions of potential consumers. The Best Part is the Conversions.
Just wanted to say thanks for letting the world in on it.. Geesh lol have to find another foot hold.. (Joking)

Hi Ryan,
Cool stuff! I am getting many ideas.
However one question:
If I want to use the CanSpam tactic and I want to use eg as keyword:
“ABC Enterprises, Inc. 57 Eastport Ave, Suite #xxx”
How do I overcome the problem of my ad being slapped by Google, as not relevant?
Because, I guess, I will not put the above keyword in my ad?
So the KEYWORD will not be in the ad text at all?
Will I not get a low Quality score for the ad and pay to much? (and do I not run the risk of be slapped finally?).
-Zeno
REPLY- You shouldn’t put this key word in your ad. You need to write an ad for the keyword, something that is relevant to what you’re selling. When done this way, There is no reason Google will slap you.
I can’t figure something Ryan.
When someone writes a mail such as “he wants to get divorced”, the prospect can’t see the ad even after he clicks on “Send”.
He might see it after he goes back to Sent Items and click on the email he previously sent, and that’s unlikely to happen often.
The receiver of the mail also might open the email and see the Ad, but he is not our prospect.
So, where is the desired case which someone just type the email, click on “Send” and suddenly the Ad appears on the right socket?
I hope I will receive a prompt answer from you Ryan, because I made a campaign and I can’t see even Impressions.
- Sharon
REPLY- The best case is that the email is being replied to. So the person who wrote the email might get a response to the email and reply to it. Although there is no guarantee as to when the ad will show up.
Ryan! Killer idea, as usual. Thanks for sharing another amazing ninja strategy. Couldn’t wait to implement it, so I’ve been working on my first campaign and I have a question.
I’ve create my first ad in the content network, and when i put in phrases to search it says “Eligible”, but I get this message:
This campaign is set to show ads only on the content network. To test this keyword, your campaign must be opted in to the search network.
So, is the keyword phrase actually running, and having to be opted into the search network is only for testing purposes?
Also when I click on exclusions, there are no exclusions showing to check, I just have the ability to add them. Any guidance would be appreciated.
All the best. Keep up the exceptional work.
Carl
REPLY- Carl, you’re correct about the fact that is actually running regardless of the alert you’re getting. Also, I added a short video about the exclusions, it should clear things up.
RYAN,
I have new RESPECT For you…You’re TRULY A Figgin Genius Man…
After listening to this last night before bed I just couldn’t sleep I tossed and turned all dang night..
Great STUFF Man Great Stuff…
Touche,
Anthony
This is great! I just started up 3 new campaigns- with nothing but gmail ads.
Can’t wait to see some results.
Also, how long does it usually take you guys to start seeing clicks? I would assume it would be considerably longer than a typical adwords campaign- but I’m REAL new to this, so I don’t know.
REPLY- I can’t make any promises on when you’ll see clicks. Sometimes it can be quicker than typical campaigns, sometimes longer
It would appear from the training that we’re to phrase match our keywords? Are we to run more than one keyword per ad group or just one? I’ve tested 3 campaigns: 1 targeting the business address, 1 targeting the headline, 1 targeting the sender, each has a single “phrase matched” keyword that’s precisely what would show up in the email. The emails are from my company so this is pretty straight forward. So far, 31 impressions against the address, 925 against the sender, 0 against the subject line of a particular email, all using phrase matching, all with 0 clicks. Any thoughts on how to make this more successful?
When I click on exclusions in my campaign all I got was.
“Add excluded placements
Enter one placement to exclude per line:”
And then there was a box underneath. In your videos it shows a list you can check off. Do we have to manually punch everything in now? Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks
REPLY- I added a video about this, and it should clear things up.
Is there anyone who has started doing this who is in the real estate business?
Ryan,
Thank you very much for this info! I didn’t have the time the first night to watch it all, so I came back tonight to finish, and I’m very impressed. You present and teach well.
Since it’s late now, I have to hit the hay for work in the morning - this is so exciting I hope I CAN sleep
- but I can’t wait to start implementing all of this. I’m in a very scary financial situation, so I’m hoping I can get this started tomorrow with the coupon Google just sent me and see some income action soon.
To answer the gentleman above me here, I am starting into the real estate business - in addition to my other online stuff, and yes, I will be using this strategy for that area of my business, as well.
Thanks again Ryan!
Hi Ryan,
I watched the Gmail Ads video - thank you for this cool Ninja idea! I got to work immediately and created a campaign with several Ad groups. Here is my challenge:
Obscure keywords or keyword phrases are simply “turned off” by Google until they deem it to be a worthy keyword. Basically, if the phrase isn’t popular enough, they label it a “low search volume” keyword and disable it.
How can I avoid this since obscurity and odd phrases are the name of the game here? I’ve had it up for 24 hours and not one hit or even impression (even on phrases that are not low search volume words).
Please help! This sounds like such a cool idea.
Thanks,
Don
Still getting ZERO impressions, and after doing a google search I found that other people who are using the content network only are having the same problem.
I’ve gone through everything and messed with my Max CPC and Daily Budget and I’m still not getting any impressions.
Everything looks as though it should be working fine, and I’ve gone through different adwords tuts just to see if maybe one of them would give me one little piece as to why this is happening, but I haven’t found anything.
I know it’s not the keywords, because I did some tests, just sending keyword LOADED emails back and forth between myself and a friend, and still I my ads don’t show up.
I’m very eager to get the ball rolling on this project, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
-RL
I’ve been getting some impressions! What may help (at least they started to be displayed after I did this) is to add:
mail.google.com
as well as
mail.google.com::Inbox,Top center
to your content placements. This was explained in that YouTube video from the guy from Google that Ryan also included. No clicks yet, but it’s looking good.
I still have a concern with “low search volume” words/phrases. For the most part, the more descriptive you get, the higher your chances are that Google will simply turn your keywords off. A HUGE problem in getting this tactic to work properly and effectively.
Any tips on that? Anyone?
dg
I am getting ZERO impressions as well. I only have content network enabled. I even tried a manual target of mail.google.com but no such luck. I am waiting 30 mins or so in between changes in case there’s a delay…. how can we get content-only ads to register impressions?
Thanks mate,
But I’ve done that from the beginning, and still no impressions.
So I targeted my own companies emails, just to really test this out. Our email list is about 400k deep, a ton of which are on gmail. I got a few thousand impressions on targeting directly for the sender name, and 8 total impressions for targeting the address, and 0 impressions for targeting the title of an email the day before it dropped for a week. 0 clicks on all campaigns. How would one go about making this work if I can’t cannibalize my own sales? Any thoughts on the questions above regarding the idea of phrase matching keywords in a content network campaign? Perhaps some more concrete examples of campaigns would be useful in order to have this be helpful. I think the idea is interesting in principle, but even with some pretty extensive content network experience in GA, I can’t figure out how this is supposed to work.
I sent an email to support about two weeks ago, here’s the transcript for others, please tell me your thoughts:
“We’ve long had ads shown on gmail based on relevancy to the keyword groups for our content network campaigns, however, there’s never been any high click through rates or outrageous conversion rates that I’ve seen, in fact i’ve disabled most of them due to poor performance. My first question is related to keywords, you mention in your videos that you can target phrases like “he wants a divorce” in order to trigger your advertisements, however, to my knowledge, Google Adwords bases the ads that show upon the ‘theme’ of the content, not a particular phrase. I’ve read additionally from some people at google that the match types for keywords you use is not used at all. It would seem from your video that the keyword, in particular a phrase matched phrase like “he wants a divorce” is the primary driver for whether an ad shows. Is that really the case? I started a test using the business address found in every one of our emails and yesterday it got 5 impressions, today very few. It would seem that targeting off a business address would be somewhat irrelevant to ad text and landing page content, which as I understand play a very important role in determining the context of the ad and whether or not it shows up. I’ve got some more questions and some thoughts for you and understand that your business model is to take the input from users and give it back, I searched the http://totalaccessclub.com/access/tac-report-gmail-advertising/ and saw some pretty minimal discussion going on, is there somewhere else I should be looking for insights / conversation from your other members? “
Can’t I download the video? It won’t allow me to.
REPLY- This video is only available for streaming for protection purposes. Thanks and sorry for the inconvenience.
Hi Ryan - what a concept! I’m very excited about this, but after reading a few of the posts concerning people not seeing their ads, I realize that we may be missing details that should be explained BEFORE we start pumping out ads, and then wondering where and when (if?) they will show up.
I guess I’m saying that the ‘big picture’ is great, but as has been said ‘the devil is in the details.’ I would appreciate additional training that cover ALL the ‘details,’ even the ones that aren’t so good (there is always a downside somewhere, even minor ones).
LOVE the concept, but it looks like we need more info.
Thanks!
REPLY- Maury, thanks for the post. As stated in the beginning of the training, this is Advanced Material. Adwords is a complicated machine, and this report is not for the purpose of teaching the technical aspects of Adwords. So this training takes some pre-knowledge.
With that said, it can be difficult to get impressions. Like Adwords, Gmail Ads has a wide range of criteria it uses to actually display an Ad. It takes into factor the amount of time the keyword is used in a Gmail account, etc. So Like any Adwords campaign, it takes tweaking and time to really make it productive. A unique key word doesn’t guarantee a lot of impressions.
I’d encourage everyone to really do their homework and learn about Adwords so they can tweak their Gmail Ads if they don’t already know how to. But again, this course is not an Adwords training. Thanks
Ryan, thanks for the reply.
Point taken - I AM new to adwords (was it so apparent? lol), so I have a lot of research and learning to do. Hoping for the shortcut, but you aren’t selling magic wands, just great information.
Will you let us know if you plan to do any future webinars or other forms of gmail ad training? I’m assuming I’m on your mailing list.
Thanks!
I’m fairly new to the internet marketing community but this seems like such an easy way to target specific buyers. Ingenious!!!
You continue to inspire and amaze the whole Internet Marketing Freternity as usual with all your Original work. Please keep up the excellent work.
I’ve seen this asked a few times already but have not yet seen an answer.
My plan is to target my competitions list and I use their addresses or company name as my keyword so I’m displaying ads to their targeted list.
Strategy was to promote my own products by 1st driving the traffic to a squeeze page. Since these people are already opening and reading emails they should be highly qualified subscribers.. Your idea in theory is GREAT!
Now the problems a few people above mentioned are first:
If I advertise for the address using the Canspam technique you told us about in the video wouldn’t the ad be irrelevant? I mean its not like my ad will contain the address and of course my landing page won’t either. I didn’t think about this problem at 1st and was exited to get started but now its hit me..
Also from what I understand having a keyword show up once does not guarantee your ad shows actually the keyword has to be shown multiple times.
So if I target the address or company name my ad won’t be displayed very much if at all.
I’d really like some of these things cleared up. I guess I’m stupid but after you revealed the Can Spam technique I figured it was the perfect way to siphon my competitors email lists right from under their nose. But it seems that its still pretty impossible to do so.
Have you personally ran campaigns targeting competitors lists?
Thanks! And I saw someone mention an upsell on this. Where’s that located?
One more thing. I’ve set up a campaign targetting certain keywords in my competitors newsletters.
Its saying “Low Search Volume” under status and says it will show my ad if it gets searches.
So will my ad be showed?
Thanks
FYI the pdf just downloaded 2x, keeps coming up, “There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired.”
Reply-Hello Bryan, I was unable to recreate this error but have sent you a different version of the same file via our support center. Hopefully that one will come through clean
